The Sabtech Memory System (SMS) is a random access, non-volatile data storage peripheral designed for harsh military environments. The SMS, designed as a drop-in replacement for the obsolete BMS1000X48008 Bubble Memory System (BMS), is compatible (form, fit and function) with the original BMS, providing easy transition when installing and utilizing the SMS. The power and I/O receptacles on the SMS are the same as those on the old BMS, so there is no need to re-cable. The command set used by the SMS is identical to the BMS and therefore requires no changes to applications written for the BMS.
Removable Media Options The SMS features Secure Digital (SD) removable media, to replace the bubble memory cassettes which are no longer available, used in the BMS. The SMS is available with single or dual media drives. The BMS required two cassettes to store 512 kb of data. This amount of data fits on any SD card available today; therefore only one media drive is necessary, although two media drives may be required for certain applications such as copying.
Two File System Options The first system available with SMS uses the FAT file system which is already present on SD media. This file system tends to be unreliable, but can easily be duplicated in any Windows-based computer with an SD card reader. The second file system option reformats the SD media to use the Extended File System Version 3 (ext3). This file system features full journaling so that it is protected from corruption. Using the Extended File System Version 3 requires a Linux-based computer with an SD card reader to duplicate.
Media Transfer Media is built on the SMS with the same utility programs currently used to build BMS cassettes. A system is also available from Sabtech that connects to a BMS or SMS and transfers data from the BMS directly to an SMS or to a local SD card reader for use in an SMS.
I/O Capabilities The SMS increases your data transfer rate significantly. It connects to a controlling device, such as an AN/UYK-44 computer, via a parallel Navy Tactical Data Systems (NTDS) interface operating in 16-bit NTDS Type B mode. The average transfer rate is 200 kb per second as compared to the slower, original BMS transfer rate of 24 kb per second.
Maintenance The SMS requires minimal periodic maintenance. It is sealed against moisture and electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and is built to withstand high levels of shock and vibration often present in military environments. The SMS does not require air cooling so there are no filters to replace. The SMS has access panels for all internal components so that upgrading or servicing the equipment can be accomplished easily and without requiring special tools or equipment. An Ethernet port is available for in-field firmware upgrades but, is not used for normal operation.
