SMILES Replaces the Ships’ Difficult-To-Maintain and Costly OJ-172 Data Exchange Auxiliary Consoles (DEAC)

YORBA LINDA, Ca., August 12, 2008 - Sabtech Industries, a leading developer of highly reliable COTS products for command and control, computers, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, announced today that the company has completed installation of its Sabtech Military Equipment Replacement System (SMILES™) on board two Polish Navy combatants.

The Oliver Hazard Perry (ORP) class ships, Gen. K. Pulaski (F272) and ORP Gen. T. Kosciuszko (F273), are Foreign Military Sales transfers from the United States Navy to Poland. The Polish Navy wanted to replace the OJ-172 Data Exchange Auxiliary Consoles (DEAC) which were difficult and expensive to maintain. The DEAC is the load device and operator console for the ship’s mission-critical MK 92 Fire Control System.

The Polish Navy chose Sabtech’s SMILES™ - a high performance, low cost replacement for a number of legacy navy peripheral devices such as the DEAC. Since SMILES performs exactly like the equipment being replaced, no program changes are required on the host. It is configured with military connectors that mate with existing cables to further simplify the transition and save costs. Subsequent conversion of existing media to SMILES completely eliminates dependence on unsupportable hardware and obsolescent tape and disk media.

Sabtech Industries, Inc. provides naval forces around the world with powerful, highly reliable board and system level products that mitigate the risk of technological obsolescence. Enhanced readiness of these warships enables Poland to proudly support NATO requirements as well. Andrzej Jonas, Editor-in-Chief of The Warsaw Voice writes, “For Poles, NATO membership is a dream come true, a dream of a close relationship with the Western hemisphere, of the alliance's protective umbrella unfurled over our land. Poles are aware of the advantages of NATO membership, but both we and our allies also know what Poland is contributing to the alliance. We have been preparing ourselves for it from the moment we regained our freedom.”

SMILES™
SMILES™ is a high performance, low cost replacement for legacy navy peripheral equipment. Using up-to-date technology, SMILES™ replaces aging devices that are often difficult and expensive to maintain. With its intuitive graphical interface, SMILES™ is easy-to-use while at the same time adding powerful capabilities not possible with the original equipment.

Because SMILES™ performs exactly like the equipment being replaced, no program changes are needed on the host. It is configured with military connectors that mate with existing cables to further simplify the transition and save costs. Conversion of existing media to SMILES™ is done using standard navy utility programs or with Sabtech’s tape conversion utility (included). Once converted, SMILES™ completely eliminates dependence on unsupportable hardware and obsolescent tape and disk media.

Replace Multiple Devices with One SMILES™
The U.S. Navy’s Integrated Weapons System Lab (IWSL), Aegis Training and Readiness Center (ATRC), and Surface Combat Systems Center have utilized SMILES to replace multiple legacy peripherals which multiplies the cost and performance benefit. A single SMILES™ unit can replace multiple devices. Each device is independent and operates concurrently with other devices. Any combination of the same device or different devices is possible.

For example, a single SMILES™ unit can replace the OL-267, RD-358 and UYH-16 or it can replace three UYH-16s. Device combinations are limited only by the number of installed NTDS interfaces and amount of memory. Poland joins the navies of Canada, Taiwan, Turkey and Spain in benefiting from the increased performance and cost savings associated with the SMILES system. SMILES replaces the following legacy equipment:

  • OJ-172 Data Exchange Auxiliary Console (DEAC)
  • USH-19 Magnetic Tape Subsystem (MTS)
  • RD-358 Magnetic Tape Subsystem (MTS)
  • USH-26 Cartridge Magnetic Tape Unit (CMTU)
  • UYH-2 Disk Memory Set (DMS)
  • BYH-1 Submarine Random Access Storage Set (SUBRASS)
  • UYH-3 Magnetic Disk Set (Basic and FMFS)
  • UYH-16 Magnetic Disk Set (FMFS)
  • Canadian MU-5028 Magnetic Disk Set
  • Canadian UYH-504 Magnetic Disk Set
  • OL-267 Data Terminal Group (DTG)
  • Canadian TD-1332 Multiplexer
  • OA-7984 I/O Console (MK 77, UNIVAC 1532)
  • USQ-69 Data Terminal Set (DTS)
  • Canadian U2049 Data Terminal Set (DTS)
  • LP2470 NTDS Line Printer
  • UGC-136 Teleprinter
